5 of Hearts

I made this little quilt back in the summer and added the hearts because it looked so plain. You may not be able to see it but each heart is woven with 2 colors of red. Remember when our teachers cut out strips of construction paper at Christmas, Valentine's and Easter so that each student could weave a place mat? That's what I'm talking about. Oh dear, I might have just dated myself....LOL
I'll still collecting fabrics for the challenge and have a couple of ideas for my design. I'm really looking forward to getting started in 2009.

My first project

This is my first black and white project for 2009. It is a ruler case made as a Christmas gift for Peg (Happy in quilting).

Half of My Blocks Complete

With my boys away for a couple days, I have my 2-yr old's naptimes to spend sewing (do I hear "YEA?!"). I have three of my 6 blocks for this lap quilt completed. They will have red sashing between the blocks, and a heavily pieced border consisting of nearly 150 HST's, but the body of the quilt is coming along.
Here's a close-up of a block.
I used photo transfer fabric that you can print on (from Soft Expressions). I am really not very pleased with it's ability to hold the color. I used it in the spring with colored pieces, and ended up doctoring many of the printouts (artwork done by 6 year olds) with fabric markers to get the colors sharper. I have followed the heat-setting directions, but there was definitely a bit of color loss. Oh, well...I will know what is in the pictures, even if nobody else will :-) If any one has good info on transfer sheets, I'd love to hear-

One to Share ~

When I was updating my 2008 quilt journal, I re-discovered the photos of Geese at Sunset ~ completed early last summer.

The geese and borders are scrappy black and whites.  The sky fabric had incredible flowers in every shade of yellow/orange/red (technically not "one color" but truly one fabric).  I came up with the non-traditional borders and pieced the offset diamonds from the leftover sky corner triangles.

Over the weekend, I started cutting pieces for my first "official" challenge quilt ~ hope to post photos in a week or so...

Fabric Choices

Hello all!! I am excited about the bw challenge! I didn't have any black and white fabric...had to purchase from Jane's and loved the selection she sent! Thank you, Jane. I have decided to add a teal/blue...now I need to find the right pattern.

Finally my share....here is the colors

So here they are I found a few blacks in my suitcase under the bed...the stash god forbid I ever go away and need that suitcase...So the pink has cute little dragon flies all over it and it is really bright. I thought since I am celebrating one year cancer free why not do the color pink..and this will be the first quilt I have actually kept or think I will keep for me...hum for me has a nice ring to it..now a pattern any suggestions or wing it ladies you all being much more experienced than I please do let me know ...well god bless and the new year is right around the corner....Lani

Black and White and What Color????

I have accepted the Black & White Challenge and am excited about getting going. I just have one problem -- what will be my third color???? I was thinking bright yellow or maybe a lime green, but now I'm leaning towards a HOT PINK!
Here is a picture of my black and white drawer:
Of course, I just knew this would not be enough of an assortment of blacks/whites, so off to The Fat Quarter Shop I went. The following is my purchase:

Oh dear, now I have to select a pattern............Stay tuned to see what I choose.

Greetings!

I have been inspired by what the participants have been showing in this challenge. All I had to show for weeks was my effort of gathering fabrics (but that seemed too dull for posting). I didn't really have a quilt plan, or an idea what my one additional color would be. Now I think I know that I will use shades of deep red to burgundy. I hope to use this quilt (a lap size) on my bed in the winter (when I freeze and my hubby sweats!). It's about 50"x68" in theory.

Here's a peek at some of the 4.5" blocks I had cut last week. I actually have several more fabrics too, they just did not make it into the picture.
The arduous task of making 96 HST's... These are done half dark and half light, for the points of the six large blocks (sixteen each).

I played with my new EQ6 program a bit since receiving it on Christmas. I gave up on completing the outer border, but you get the general idea. The quilt is kind of simple, but I hope to let the patterns of the fabrics be the focal. Additionally, where there are tan squares below, will be black and white photographs of my kids, printed on fabric.
Here's a sneek glimpse at a few of the pictures I have chosen for this...They will be about 4" square when printed. Pretty cute. The girl IS a camera magnet.
I am taking pictures over the last 7 years, from when my oldest was a baby. The quilt will probably mortify the kids in a few years!

Snowballs

Hey All!

I am so excited to get working on this project. A few weeks back from I ordered the Califon Collection by Mark Lipinski. ChristaQuilts! was having a sale so I got a 13 fat quarter set plus some yardage. Dear friends were married in October so this project is for them.

There is a r/w/b quilt on the current issue of Quilting that has me intrigued. It is called "So Many Snowballs." I think with the triangles being reds and the main pieces being the Califon, it would make for an amazingly modern project. We shall see... all in good time. I have a TON of other projects but hope to get this at leased cut before January is over.

BlackWhiteBlue and a Merry Christmas too!

Hello all! I hope everyone is having a safe and enjoyable holidays. I have been thinking about what I want my black and white project to be. I am thinking of black, white and blues quilt. I think it could look really amazing. It would be the same pattern as this other one I did (follow the link if you want to see it, it has so much color I don't want to taint this site - just kidding :).

Here is a stack of my blacks, whites and blues I'm thinking about using.

I'm giving away a bunch of FREE SCRAPS I have (all kinds of colors, fabrics and sizes). Visit my blog and post a comment on Scrap Saturday to enter the giveaway. Be sure to talk about your art goals/resolutions for 2009.

I Have Started The Challenge....

It's a good to go!

My growing black and white stash

Thanks to Jackie for letting me join in the fun. I am the one who is lucky to be getting Aviva's black and white nickels. I sorely need them to add to my pitiful stash, as you can see, of black and white fat quarters. In the box are some that I've had for years, but they mostly read black. I recently bought a few more. The nickels will be perfect for me, as I'd like to plan a very scrappy looking black and white quilt. I haven't decided on the third color yet, though!

I actually do have a black, white and yellow in progress. I started it in a workshop at least ten years ago. After the workshop, I worked on it a little at home and then lost interest in it. I dug it out the other day and am considering finishing it for the challenge. I'm afraid to take a photo of it, LOL.

Mini project - black, white and blue

I've teased you all with my mini B&W project - well after my owls I was thinking of B&W birds - there's only one type that comes to mind at this time of year - they are usually all over christmas cards - yip penguins

Here are nine little penguins and I have them holding together the glacier pincushion

(sorry the 2nd photo isn't the right way around - it is in picasa but doesn't load that way on the blog)

This was fun to make - I started hand piecing in the early evening on Saturday and completed all nine penguins that night (each hand pieced) then made up the cushion on Sunday and stitched everything in place together.

my blog: flamingstitches.blogspot.com - sorry there is no link at the side yet!

Oh and incase I'm not on again before the holidays each of you please have a great and safe Christmas

Black & White Nickels are taken

That was quick, but the Black & White Nickels have been claimed.

give away

As many of you know, I have a new baby (4 weeks on Wednesday) & if you did not already know, Baby's generate a lot of stuff.

For a while, I was really into Nickel Quilts (2 books on the subject by Pat Speth).

I use under the bed storage - used to all be fabric, now just the one bin has fabric & that is mostly Nickels (5 inch squares).

Anyway I pulled out the white on black & black on white squares & am offering them for the price of postage. (the stack is close to 2 inches high to give you an idea of the amount.)

If you want them drop me an e-mail with your snail mail address: aviva_hadas @ yahoo . com (remove the spaces.) Be sureto mention black & white - because I offered the rest of them on my blog - The Calico Cat - "Aviva" on the black & white sidebar.

Mailing next week or the first week in January.

Snowflakes are White . . .

I've pulled the fabrics for my first challenge quilt ~ black and white with reds ~ which will be started in January. There will be two others, each based on a different 'pattern' ~ one b&w with a glorious blue and one b&w with fuschia. But for now, until the stitching begins in earnest, I will share this amazing ornament that my husband made for me (he's a woodturner). Turned from a chunk from a box elder log, the hollow sphere measures 3.5" at the widest and 2.75" tall. With the ribbon hanger, it weighs a mere 8.8 grams (that's 3/10ths of an ounce) ~ truly amazing!

Blessings to all during this busy, busy time of year ~

Merry Christmas

I finally paid a visit to my local quilt shop last week and bought a selection of lovely black and white fabrics so I can now really start to think about this challenge.

Happy Christmas to everyone and a peaceful 2009

WHOOHOO!!! I GET TO PLAY TOO!

Hello there from Philadelphia, PA! Your black and white projects are soooo beautiful and I am happy to be included. Black/white/red is my favorite combo, so I'll be challenged to mix it up. Here are pictures of two past projects and as the year goes along there will be more to come.

Yay! I'm In!

Hello, everyone, from waaaay "up nort," (Upper Michigan- I'm a "yooper".). I am really new to the blogging thing, so bear with me if I mix something up. I started my blog YESTERDAY just so I could join this challenge, but I can see blogging being something that I really enjoy and it will probably take over my whole life. I only recently discovered the wonderful, supportive community online for/by quilters so I have been frantically trying to read everything on here. I have been getting so much inspiration.

I often make quilts for wedding gifts and my husband is standing up in a wedding in March. The wedding colors are... Black and White! With some red. So that is probably what I will end up doing. I do love lime green, so maybe I will make one to keep also. :-) I am very excited to join this challenge. This is my first project that I will be doing "with" anyone else as I don't belong to a guild, although my mom, sister, cousins and aunts all quilt on some level, so I do have that network of support.

I am currently working on this:

It has the black and white, but there are green AND red in it, so it wouldn't count for the challenge. My taste in fabric has changed since I made all those cherries (5 years ago), so the fabric around the blocks is much less "country" than the fabric IN the blocks, but it will be scrappy and so you won't notice too much.

Thanks for letting me join! I need to start collecting black and white fabric now. Darn. That'll be rough... (there was a lot of sarcasm there.)

Hi, challenge quilters!

It's a good day to be a quilter, isn't it? I'm looking forward to creating a new piece for this challenge. I just finished a purple/black/white quilt earlier this month for an auction, but it wasn't my absolute best work. It was wonky (inspired by Tallgrass Prarie Studio Jacquie), though, so it was a heck of a lot of fun!! Here's a photo of a block. I'll post a photo of the quilt after the holidays.
Be safe during the holidays. Be happy. Rock on!

Mini project

I've been playing around at the weekend making mini owls at phone charms and come up with and idea for a mini black and white project - just using plain fabrics - I'm hoping to get this underway over the weekend and share it with you all before the holidays
So as they say 'watch this space' - if it works :-)
Oh and please everyone on the challenge accept my warmest seasons greetings - have a great holiday period

I'm Joining the Party!

Hi, everyone! I'm so excited about joining this group!

Thank you, Jackie, for inviting me. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and have fun making our black and white challenges.

I have quite a few black and white fabrics, and I'm constantly adding to my stash. The only thing is, I don't have any idea what I'm going to make with them! Now that I am in the group I have an excuse to buy more fabrics! I'll choose a pattern after the first of the new year.

Thanks, again, Jackie for inviting me to the group.

Amanda
I'm here, I'm here, I'm here! Thank you for the invitiation. Sad to say but my black and white stash is practically non-existent (luckily, I am a positive person and flipped this to a positive.... now I have a reason to do some shopping and swapping). I do have a small project in mind to start with but have yet to commit to my 'color'.
This it my inspiration for my 1st bw challenge piece. My plan is to make a mini-quilt / wallhanging similar to the picture below. I found this on google images and it is not my work - do not know the original artist to give proper credit (sorry).

I have a few doll quilts to finish up and then it I will start my 1st b&w challenge piece.

A miniature black and white

I am so excited to be included in this challenge. My favorite colors are red, black and white and I've made quilts in these colors all my life. I look forward to trying to branch out and use black and white with other colors! : )

This is my first attempt at a project for this challenge, though I hope to make a bed-sized quilt before it's over!
I've always wanted to make a miniature quilt but have always been nervous about all those little pieces. Well, in an effort to add stress to the holidays I have ignored all else for the day and made a little miniature quilt. When I laid it out my first thought was "Wow, that's a LOT of orange for one quilt."
The little friendship star blocks are 3" and the whole thing measures 14.5"x22". I am playing with the idea of another border but haven't added anything else.

I've yet to quilt it but hopefully will do that tomorrow and not have this end up a UFO. I don't know what I'll do with it after that, since I'm not a real big orange person.

My first project. This tote is by Penny Sturges and is called "Charm Party Tote". It's big! 11" x 14" x 4". I used 37 different fabrics and cut them all myself. That was a chore LOL! There are 2 large pockets on the inside. I've never done anything like this before. I made it for a gift that has to mailed tomorrow but I'd sure like to keep it myself! I'm pretty proud of it.

I've joined the group!!!

I'm happy to join this group of creative quilters.
I have these 2 bins of black and white fabrics and love them. I add them everywhere!!!!

I'm looking forward to a 2009 project........and allowing the creative juices to flow with just one other color.........ahhhh......the possibilities.
Linda from Lansing.................GO GREEN!!!!

It's been a while... (A question for you)

Having a baby sure does cut into blogging time. :o)

Any way, I have been thinking about the black & white challenge. Actually, I have been thinking about quilt math... (My brain just can not wrap itself around the seam allowances.)

So, I have a question for you...

I plan to make "O" blocks. The centers will be my color & cut at 3.5 inches square, so the two other pieces in that row would also be 3.5 inch squares, & would be the black & white prints. My question, how long would the outer rows of black & white be? 3.5 x 10.5?

I am not sure if you can e-mail me directly or not from this blog, but my e-mail address is:
aviva_hadas @ yahoo . com (remove the spaces.)

Thank in advance. (My next step is to pull out & count my black & whites.)

I'm in!!!

I am very excited to join your group. I was so happy to get my invitation today. While I was waiting this morning I figure I would start my first project, in hopes of getting in.

Today I made my niece Nikole Amy Butler's Birdie Sling and Pink Sand Beach Designs' Little Glam Bag. Because really who doesn't like to have a matching makeup bag and purse. As you can tell my colors are Black White and Hot Pink. Nikole plays soccer and is hoping to be able to referee this next year.

And since these projects whipped up so quickly I started to cut out another Birdie Sling and Glam Bag out of Black White and Red. These are for my other niece Natalie who plays competition Fast Pitch.

Now for my stash here it is.

I think I will be able to make more than a few quilts. My first will be Mod Quad by Blue Underground in Black White and Hot Pink. Again this is for Nikole she is turning 13 in a few months and I am redoing her bed.

How About...

Let's see, black and white and maybe a little brown? hmmmm.

Hoping I don't disappoint

Thank you so very much for letting me join in this challenge.
I just hope I don't disappoint anyone taking part, or let the side down with my efforts.
I've been surfing and searching for ideas as to what I could do, I must say with the misguided idea that I had 'a reasonable amount' of black and white combination fabrics - well other than standard plain fabrics. Well I was wrong this is all I have:-

So it looks like I'll be the standard black, white, red combination. I have been considering if I should buy more fabric, there is a lovely stash builder pack at Quilterscloth, but at present I think I've decided on what format the challenge will take and don't anticipate that additional fabrics will be necessary. Here's hoping I'm right. Lets see what unfolds over the holidays.

Started my Black & White

Decided I had better get started on this challange. So passing a quilt shop I just had to stop and get some supplies.

Liked the pink one I saw a while back, so got some of that too.

Only to get home and discover I did have several B & W'sAnd some more.
So just had do do some blocks. No plan, just whatever comes. Darn - now I have to go to a Christmas Party and I just feel like staying home sewing.
