Well it took me a while but I finally finished my black, white and red log cabin.Its machine quilted with loopty-loop quilting and I really enjoyed doing it. I found some interesting patterns evolving and had a lot of fun with the quilting.

I did complete a B & W & Pink quilt in 2009 for a girl friend's 40th birthday, but did not take any photos before I gave it to her. I will one day co-ordinate to have camera and remember to take a pic when I am at her house. Until then, this is a progress shot that I took along the way. (The white squares actually contain a flower stitchery pattern, stitched in black)For the same friend, I made this cute wall hanging for her new home.I also made this top from the left over fabrics from the first quilt. Yes, so I over estimated!!! There's always the stash. As yet, this one does not have a home, so will remain a top until a home is found. It is a disappearing 9 patch and sew easy but sew effective.

Falling Shoo-Flies

Back from the LA quilter and bound, here is my result of our Bee's "Your Way" mystery challenge of 2009. We each chose a 9-patch based block and over the months made 3". 6", 9", and 12" blocks of the fabric we each had chosen for ourselves. Near the end these were combined into 12" blocks with spacers and then the big blocks put together as we pleased. My idea was that the Shoo-Flies were falling down by "weight", so the biggest are on the bottom.

The plan was for a lap quilt, but I made MORE blocks so that it would cover our queen sized bed. And I am the "wonky" one in our Bee, therefore the odd angles.

Made the border treatment with a Seminole piecing style and three (four?) different sizes of squares. The Shoo-flies have been SID and then the waving lines put between them to echo the border fabric.

Woman With Red Lipstick: Part 2

I entered the Keepsake Quilting "Black, White and Red Challenge" in the fall of 2007. It was understood the 1st and 2nd place became the property of Keepsake Quilting. My entry won 2nd place which is awesome but I miss my quilt!! I was able to see it recently at a area quilt show and decided to remake the quilt but with my rules. I changed the size from square to rectangle and was not limited to only 6 fabrics. I appliqued using the raw edge fused technique. It was machine quilted on my commercial sewing machine. I used red metallic thread to create the woman's strands of hair. I embellished the quilt with rhinestones, glitter, fabric paint and small silk flowers. I love the red polka dots on the eye lids and wanted to use more of it but it didn't work since I had so much red in the quilt already. I like the "dreamy" look the woman casts. Hello Everyone,

I wanted to thank everyone for all the wonderful works that you have put together over the year!! They have all truly been inspiring to me and to many others. I hope that you all had fun making your projects. I am sure it was a challenge for some and for some, not so much!

So here is my proposal...

1. I am going to keep this blog open!

2. You can continue to post new Black and White projects as you like.

3. If you don't want to continue, send me an e-mail and let me know. I will remove your name from the list.

4. Once your name is removed that will allow me to invite new members.

I worked all week on getting this top made and finished it this evening. I guess technically it's not a finish because it's not quilted, but this is as finished as most of my quilts ever get. LOL!

I loved watching everyone post their projects and learned a lot this past year. Thank you everyone, and most of all, Jackie for all the work you put into this. It was really fun and inspirational.

Hi everyone, I have finally had the time to post my black/white with a touch of pink for 2009. This little quilt measured 24x24 that I made for a quilt swap. It is now with its new owner and she is very happy with it. I will be making a full size quilt in the coming year. I have really enjoyed looking at all the lovely quilts and bags that have been made. Can't wait to see what everyone does this coming year with the theme.

My 'SIMPLE' B/W Finish

I struggled all year about how I wanted to do my quilt. As I thought about it I decided I wanted it 'simple' and to have the BLACK as my dominate color without it being ALL black. Well, I guess it turned out simple enough and I made it about lap size. This most definitely WAS a challenge for me.....but, I guess I can say I am happy with it. I have more photos posted on my blog.....Brown Dirt Cottage. Thank You Jackie....this was fun!!!!

Wonky Blocks

I love my wonky blocks - after taking inspirition from Jacquie and her Orange Crush quilt - here is my humble sample.

I've loved working on this and I must say it has urged me to look at more contemporary designed quilts, both pieced and appliqued.

There is one small section however which needs a little TLC, I've got one slight mishap on a seam, which unfortunately I only noticed when 90% of the quilting was complete. So I'm considering adding a applique patch just to cover and protect that one section.

Thanks for the challenge - it took me a while to get going but once I'd decided on a designe that I was happy with, I was determined to finish before the end of this year.

Hello Everyone,

While on retreat, I had the opportunity to finish up my Black and White Challenge! Well, just the top is done. I have to make the back and then quilt it, mere technicalities.

Anyway, here it is...

I really love the splash of orange in this. The design is really a variation of the Kaleidoscope block, but by adding extra pieces it makes it spin! You can find the pattern HERE. Best of all the entire quilt was cut on my AccuQuilt Studio Cutter. Well, with the exception of the borders. It took about 15 minutes to cut. Not bad.

Long weekend

As we didn't get away again on holiday, due to a number of reasons, I've got some holidays to use up from work before the end of the year - so this weekend is a lovely long weekend. I'm off until Thursday.

Over these few days and after completing some of those craft distracting issues (housework), I'm hoping to get a few hours each day up in my craft room - it will be chilly up there but hopefully some frantic sewing will keep me warm.

This Black/White/Red "Fractured Star" is my second and final installment in this wonderful challenge. Each block measures 8 1/2" with a 2" red border and 3" piano key border. I had a blast choosing colors, looking at everyobody's quilts and reading about what each person blogged about.

I'm entering this as my challenge, although it doesn't quite meet the challenge requirements of black and white and one colour. This is black and white and bright , with lime green being the dominant colour and lots of others mixed in for good measure. It is 50 by 60 and still in the flimsy stage. I intend this to be machine quilted on a flannel backing, so it will be a cozy throw. I've been watching the rest of you do the challenge, and I couldn't limit myself to one colour. But I did collect b/w prints for the last several months, and cut into about half of them for this project. At last count, I used more than 50 fabrics in this quilt. Thanks Jackie for a great challenge, and for enlightening me in the path of black and white.

Happy Zombie they are made from 3 FQs and are very quick to make up! This little tote is black and white and bits of yellow. the yellow is the centers of the daiseys . At long last I've started my B&W challenge project. After a lot of web surfing, magazine browsing and doodleing, and considering my limited stash of black and white fabrics I've decided on a wonky block format for a lap quilt / living room throw. One evening earlier this week I quickly pieced together seven of the centre panels. I have to say that this is a quick and economical block to use us a limited selection of fabrics for a decent sized top. Once the black sashing is added to each centre panel and the blocks squared up to 12.5" the minimum sized quilt will be about 36" x 48" (3x4 blocks). Above are half the blocks pieced together ready for batting/backing, as I propose to 'quilt as you go' each half of the top, but need to firstly use some of the remaining fabrics for a 'coin' stirp across the backing panel - just to zest it up a bit.

Here are the other six blocks ready to be sashed up.

Denne har jeg ingen planer for så denne henger jeg opp på quilterommet kanskje noen kommer forbi og får lyst på den ;-)

Another bag is finished and it is very much inspired by the norwegian designer AnnaKa. As you know I love using black, white and red in my projects and it is a lot fun sewing bags. I do not have any plans for this special bag so I will put in my sewing room . Maybe someone will come along and pick it up somehow ;-)

I haven't posted a quilt or project yet on this blog and at one point I wondered if I would even complete the Black and White Challenge. After I finished my daughter's graduation quilt I realized: Hey! This quilt is black, white and Eagles green! A light went off in my head. I was shocked to realize I made my challenge quilt and didn't even know it. Ha.
If you read my blog you know this isn't my favorite quilt. But that aside, it works for what it is for - Jamie and her love of football and the Eagles and to commemorate her graduation in 2009.
And technically the quilt has "light black" in it, too. But I'm sayin' that is ok. Deal? The quilt has actually grown on me now that I'm done messing with the fabric and deciding what to do with it. It will look great in Jamie's room and it will always be something that I can remember I made in 2009. I had it machine quilted by an edge to edge quilter. I picked out a "graduation 2009" theme for the quilting. And it says 2009 on the quilt. So it is perfect for the challenge. Too bad the quilter quilted the pattern on the back of the quilt so the 2009 is backwards on the front. It is a good thing Jamie is easy to please. It will always bug me, but oh well. It is just fabric after all.

But I am certainly celebrating my 2009 Black and White challenge finish! Yayyy.

Black and White Clutch

Hello Everyone,

I just completed this cute little clutch style purse. I just love it! I only added one color, fuschia, my fave!

In this first photo, you can see the magnetic closure I added to keep your things extra safe.

Here you can see the faceted black button added for embellishment.

The quilting and top stitching in a black and white variegated rayon thread. Just right for this one!

Here is a photo of the whole bag.

However, I am not keeping this one. If you like it, you can find it up for sale on my new Etsy shop. I am off to make another for myself!

I finished this last week. It's a gift for a friend of mine for her wedding. The top went together really easily but the quilting was more of a challenge. I'm glad I stuck with it though.

I Finally Made Something Black and White

I've been in this black and white challenge ever since it started and I finally made something black and white! Woo Hoo!

My rocking chair on my front porch was looking a little lonely and needed something bright and cheerful to greet my guests and anyone driving by.

I think my little monogrammed pillow was the perfect thing! I used a green and white polka dot for the pillow cover and a black and white mini-polka dot for the monogram. I machine appliqued it in black thread using the satin stich.

I hope to have a tutorial on my blog , soon, on how to make your own. I'll let you know when I do.

The pattern name is Kitty Klatch, published in 1999 by designer Janet Jones Worley.

I found the pattern at Stitcher's Garden in Franklin, TN in 2004.

Her wall hanging layout calls for 9 kitties (I enlarged it to 12) and there is also a design for a large lap/small bed quilt.

Meet Dave & Friends ~

This 40" w x 39" high wall hanging inspired by a 1999 pattern of Janet Jones Worley is almost ready to go to the longarm quilter ~ once finished, it will hang near my desk at work.

Why Dave & Friends? I took another quilt to the office a week or so ago and asked my co-workers to help name it. During that process, one of our attorneys kept saying 'name it Dave' ~ didn't fit for that quilt but it works for this one (plus there are now 12 partners in our firm, two of whom are Davids ~ not something I 'planned' but it happened anyway).

There's another black and white and red pending, but I need to finish up a few other tops first.

Leftover Lime

I had some time in my sewing room yesterday evening and used up the black/white squares and some lime pieces. It measures 34" x 48"

I don't know whether it's "Music Between the Bars" or "Bars Between the Music"

I have no plan for it - just enjoyed the stitching.

Now I really mean no more black and white - I have a sundress to sew for Allison - pink flowers, at her request. Fun!!!

Lime Green Linda

I'm known as Lime Green Linda by my quilting friends. I have liked the color for many years - and now so many more people are using it!!!!
I took the picture on my clothes line in the back yard this morning.
The top is done. I sewed many of the blocks together while at Quilting By the Lake in April.
The blocks and borders were sewn together this week.
I am in no hurry to finish this, so it may stay unquilted for some time.

The black/whites are all "opposites" - you can see that in this picture and the next.

Block size is 8" square and there are 56 blocks in the quilt.

I have a black/white sateen that will go on the back. It has been in my stash for some time and needs to be used. It will feel good on the back!!!!

"Moo and Blue"

I made this "Moo & Blue" blanket for my little boy, Ian.
Since he didn't allow me to cut the moo fabrics into pieces so I just add a small blue strip in the middle.

I think "straight line sewing" is the easiest way to quilt this blanket without walking foot or darning foot. I haven't had it yet :(

A little black and white polka dotted corduroy and a cameo button

makes this tote a little classy and a little fun. This was the original block I started my challenge with then changed my mind on the dresden (see yesterday's post). I didn't want this block to sit alone so voila`, a new tote.

Sorry the black marble has photographed grey, but this is my offering which will be a present for a friend.
The other side with a practical black base.
Inside is a patchwork of the black and white fabric with a black pocket. I used warm and natural as an interlining to make the bag and handles stronger.

Spring cleaning sometimes unearths some interesting things...this year I found a black and white log cabin block-a leftover from a sampler quilt I made in the early '90s and a piece of black and white "cow" fabric that I had used to recover the desk chairs in the boys' rooms about 5 years ago-they just called to be made into something for the B & W Challenge!

I decided to try my hand at making an apron . Now, I have never sewn clothes, only quilts, so this was appropriately quite a challenge for me .

I couldn't resist naming my apron: Home At the Range :)

I don't often give quilts actual "people" names, but sometimes it just seems to fit. I have a "Sarah" hanging in my hallway, and now I have finished "Delilah". For the record, my sister picked the name out for me.

It is 38" square, all machine pieced and quilted by me.

I have been reading a new blog by Valarie
called Moda bake shop and there was a tutorial for briaided rugs.
Well I remember that as a child I used to watch my grandmother make these and I always wondered how she did.
Well with this wonderful tutorial I made a small one for my daughter to lay her feet upon when she wakes up in the morning .
It matches her college quilt.

I have finished my Black and White quilt challenge hosted by Jackie. I am so happy and I have this good feeling inside me right now...
I have sent it away to get quilted because I am not comfortable /clever enough to quilt it myself and handquilting is out of the question. (takes too much time)
Thank you Jackie for making this challenge happen, I have had a lot of fun. Time will show if I have time for another BW quilt in 2009. My mother was quite lost in this quilt so I might make her one but I have not decided yet! So please do not tell her..( you now christmas is not that far away)

Black and white challenge

I have designed a black and white quilt with a hint of red for my daughters college days.
It is in the to be quilted pile.
I have started working on some accessories like these four throw pillow covers.
I am in need of a pattern for some pillow shams. I had one but for the life of me I cannot find it so if anyone knows of a tutorial please let me know.
These blocks were the ones I requested from a recent block swap.
I am so pleased with them. I had enough to even make her a runner.
I have to make a few blocks myself because she needs a topper for her end table so I have already started making some which gives me piecing practice.

Annie's Choice

I've had 12 black, white and red Annie's Choice blocks in my closet for over a year. I finally decided on a layout and have started stitching. I still need to find the right red for this quilt. I'll post pictures of the block columns once they are pieced.

I'm looking forward to having an old UFO finished!

Trellis Roses

I finally finished one of my challenge quilts that I've had in mind for several months. I named the quilt, which measures 54" x 74" without borders at this time, "Trellis Roses." There were two designs that I couldn't decide on so some of my blogger friends helped my out. See my blog to get the low-down. I'm really pleased with this quilt and plan on making one more before it's all said and done.

I don't think my quilt fits the guidelines of black and white with only one other color. All of the fabric used to make the squares were black and white prints. There are cats and dogs, cow splotches, sheet music print, checked flag print, african animals, stripes, and polka dots. I used orange for the paririe points and began the sashing. I ran out, used a coordinating yellow from the stash. The unusal shape by the date is a butterfly. Its wings are moveable. Also added are grosgrain ribbon used to attach toys to the quilt.

But after completing I realized that a bit of green, yellow, and blue crept in also.

The chick with attitude was handpainted by BIL. The book and teethers were purchased from a local discount chain specifically to add to the quilt.

As you can see, the baby loves this quilt. His grandpa refuses to call the Prairie Points, "Prairie Points"---they are "Dinosaur Edges".

Scrap Giveaway

I know what I am going to do for my Black/White/Blue project. I participated in a charity block project recently, Project Improv, and finished my blocks today - it inspired me to use my B/W/Blue fabrics to make these 'wonky' log cabin blocks. Here (above) is the first block I made.

Finally I had finished the top, the first one of my Black & White project.
I think the photo is not good enough. There was a problem with the light so I can't pictured it clearly.

Please forgive me to use a little bit grey for the border (Is it ok, Jackie?)
I've tried not using it, but I feel the pink-BW 'pop out' brightly when I used grey as the border...

Still I have some blocks leftover and plan to make square pillowcases.

Boy oh Boy I just got done posting my pictures to the calendar quilt challenge and good lord I'm put to shame by the great strips people are sewing....run over and take a look at my hummmmmm attempt at it....SO Hi I put my blocks out on the table and thought wow I'm good really good I'm done....lol...not quite little lady you still need like 30 or more blocks...so back to the ironing board and sewing machine I run.....just checking in....

While most of them do not add 1 color, you can easily see where a bit of color could have been added to them like on this one:

I have used up the last of the black/white/yellow fabrics. Ok.......I did have to buy a little more for the larger dress.....

Allison and her doll, Allison, have dresses - and purses - that coordinate. Now on to something black and white and some other color!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finished my 2nd black and white challenge piece. It's just shy of 15" square and is paper pieced (block: attraction block). I machined quilted a few random lines using variegated pink thread. I really like the way it came out and hope my swap partner likes it as well (shh, hope she does not check this blog). I did not want the binding to take away from the block so this was put together like a quilt sandwich and quilted afterwards.

Building Peace, Coming Home, Healing...

I've been sick with the flu this week and laying in bed feeling sorry for yourself leads to some serious thinking time...my mind went lots of places and when I felt good enough to sit behind a sewing machine my idea for this challenge materialized.

I made this little quilt, 'Building Peace' for the Illuminated Phrase Challenge a few months ago. Mine is more like an illuminated statement. The quote I chose to illustrate was this one:
"Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.”
John F. Kennedy

I had dinner with a friend from Houston a week ago. She had just attended her son's homecoming ceremony in Colorado a few days before our dinner. He had served in Iraq for almost a year. While she was proud and so happy he was home, the concern for him, about what he had experienced, and how he might be affected was evident in her face and peeked through her words. I made this second quilt for Owen. It's called 'Coming Home'. It's full of symbolism and messages in the piecing and quilting, but I will leave that to you to interpret.

While I was sewing this quilt I started thinking of my brother-in-law who was in Iraq for 2 tours as an army surgeon. He was in the first push into Baghdad. His wife generously shared letters and emails that he wrote during his tours. I remember talking with him after he returned and he shared how difficult it was to operate and patch men together, conrades and combatants on tables right next to each other. He told me one day he had just saved the life of an insurgent and he pulled one of the field commanders aside and told him to do his job right next time. In other words, he would have rather had the man dead than have had to save his life. He told me he had never seen pure evil before. It was heartwrenching to listen to him talk. It was rare that he did. He is a changed man.

This last quilt is for him. I call it 'Healing'.

I hope you will forgive me the touch of gray...it was the perfect addition to give the feeling I was going for. Both quilts are made from the scraps from the first little quilt. (there was a LOT of waste in the cutting of that quilt!)

One Top Done....

I finally pieced together my Black & Limey...all blocks were done and hanging beautifully on my design wall all through January and into the first few weeks of February. I took a 2 day trip with a friend to the ocean and put it together! I love how it has turned out! I plan to have a friend quilt it for me, unsure what and how to quilt it yet. I made the borders as wide as the blocks - 8", to show off the design in the fabric. I'm very happy with the end results:

I have another Black/White top to work on as well, that is from a UFO over 2 years ago. I'll pick it up next!

I got my Fons & Porter magazine yesterday, on the second page was this advertisment!
There are at least 2 other advertisements for black & white fabrics...

I've said it before, but we must be ahead of the curve. :o)

I officially want some of that black & yellow - yellow being my 1 color... (Oh & I am going to cut some yellow after I post this.)

It was quilted by Chris Ballard (she used lime green thread and an amazing panto named "Shiva")

Next one is partially cut out ~ will share when there is something worthwhile to see!

Log Cabin Quilt Top finished

Here's the black, white and red log cabin top finished! I am so glad this is done-I was beginning to feel like it was jinxed! I finished the blocks up with no problem but then once I started to do the sashing things started to go wrong-from my first miscutting the sashing too wide to two irons burning out!

Here you can see most of the different whites I used: a white with red, a white with red and black and a white and black polka dot as well as alot of the black and whites.

Here's another black and white-I had bought this fabric years ago at a quilt show: you know, one of those rolled up fat quarters...well when I got it home I discovered it was a skeleton fabric :(

not really me...but it looks great here-I like the boldness of the white.

Here's one more black and white-its a Japanese fabric...that covers all the blacks.

Here's you can see the last white with the small black leaves-I think this was an Elly S reproduction fabric if I remember correctly.

One of the fun things of this project was using all sorts of different "era" fabrics and seeing how well each one added to the other and the overall look.

I finished my black and white and turquoise quilt. I ended up doing a diagonal grid. I will be delivering it personally to my grandson in the U.S. in less than three weeks. You can see it on my blog.

black & white fabrics

I feel like and enabler... It's not like these are on sale or anything, but I just got an advertisement from Hancock's of Paducah (funny thing - I usually delete them right away, really I do.) & saw black & white fabrics, so I peeked. On the ad, there are actually 2 black & white sets being featured, so we must be right on tract for what is currently popular. :o)

I was soooo tempted to get the black & white minky - but the sticker shock saved me.

(Hopefully I do not indulge on black & whites too much next weekend at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show.)

Design: Lise Bergene

My quilt top for the Black an white Quilt challenge is finished and I am so happy.
It is going to be a sofaquilt and I plan to send it away to be quilted. I feel a lot safer leaving the quilting to someone pro, Quilt'n Arendal. I am thinking about having fleece as backing , what do you think?

Color choice made!!

It took me a while to finally settle on my one additional color for the Black and White Challenge: ice blue. I saw a quilt online months ago made in black, white and ice blue and it was stunning!! Now, I'm not saying that my quilt will be, but at least it will have stunning colors. I'm not one who typically likes brights, and I've always thought brights went well with black and white. In order to tone down the quilt, I've chosen this:

I left the photo a bit larger than normal, hopefully, you will be able to see the fabric color well.

Now, I have to decide on a pattern!!!

Making Progress...

...albeit a little slower than some.

So I got this fantastic striped fabric, onsale last month. I am using this to make a literal ton of HST's for a border. I made over 150 of these only to find that it was not quite enough.

They are going together in strips like this and make up the last border (1.5") on my lap quilt. What you can't detect is that that quilt (below) is actually in 3 pieces so that I can machine quilt it. I have actually quilted one of the sections, but have not yet photographed it. I made a quilt at Christmastime like this and it worked very well. It was completely indistinguishable that it was made in pieces. I am hoping to quilt one section every couple weeks. It is tedious quilting, and quite honestly, I have lost steam on this quilt and have refocused my interests elsewhere. I will finish it soon though!

Here is the finished product. The more I look at it the more I like it. This project was all about new techniques for me....couching, random stiching/quilting and even the way I put the binding on (I strayed from my normal way and mixed it up a bit - don't mind the results but will need more practice before I try it on a quilt). Blogged about it here.

Block for the B/W/Turquoise

Thanks for all the nice comments on my Black, White and Turquoise!

In a comment on my own blog, Anne asked me what the block is called. I would call it a double four patch. Here is a closeup of one block so you can see the placement of the patches.

Now I think I need ideas for some easy quilting. I'm inclined to just make a diagonal grid in order to finish it fast and to avoid extra strain on my brain. Any better ideas?

Have you ever purchased a piece of fabric only to wonder why later?

I know exactly why & where I purchased these two fat quarters, but that doesn't make me like them any more...

You see, I purchased these for at lease 3 reasons.

1. black & white

2. both black on white & white on black

3. words

4. circles (this one is pushing it.)

To this day, when I "read" the fabric I still have no idea what it means. Why did the manufacturer print it? Why did the vendor purchase it? Maybe they had my rationale?

Oh well, I am using them in my black & white challenge quilt.

Black/White/Red ... again?

Okay ... I know . . . it's that old black and white with red again . . . I cannot help it, IT IS my FAVORITE! So these are just some hearts that I paper-pieced for a friend. I hope she will enjoy the colors as I do!

Well . . . these strips represent an attempt (at least) to break away from the black and white with red . . . I hope I will enjoy the finish as much as I do my favorite. Stay tuned . . . teeheehee!
UPDATE: PROGRESS ON THAT BLACK/WHITE plus BLUE . . . I have no idea what the end will be, but I like what's happening so far . . .
